Maui County Council Pushes Back Against GMOs in the Name of Home Rule!
On Friday, March 20, 2009 at their regular meeting, Maui’s County Council unanimously voted to support a resolution to oppose House Bill 1226, a preemption bill targeting local regulation of GMOs.
This bill, which has now crossed to the Senate, would prevent all of Hawaii’s counties as well as the state itself from regulating genetically engineered plant organisms.
By unanimously passing a resolution to oppose this bill, the Maui County Council have sent a clear message to state legislators and the biotech industry: Maui’s citizens intend to hold on to their right to determine what is best for their own communities.
